SAG Awards

Although I try to announce it in advance every year during our "Point The Remote" segment, I want to stress this year that if you are a fan of celebrities from film and television, and the shows themselves, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards is better than any Academy Awards (Oscars) show I've seen, and I always watch all the awards shows.

SAG, in case you don't know a lot about it, is the actors' union, so this show is all about the actors and ensemble casts of film and television. It's a well done show without all the unnecessary, overblown stuff in the Oscars that prevents us from hearing good winning speeches. The thing I always hate about the Oscars is how they end up rushing all the winners' speeches, preventing us from what we most want to see, all because they need time for their ridiculous pre-produced stuff that takes up more than three hours. So, although it's on TNT and not network tv, next year watch the SAG's if you really want good entertainment!

The Iron Giant

My four year old son, while we were shopping at a grocery store, picked out a movie from the discount rack. I had never heard of it and had my doubts, but it was on sale so we brought it home. It turns out to be one of the best kid cartoon movies we've ever seen. It's called The Iron Giant. The characters are voiced by Jennifer Anniston, Harry Connick Jr. and Vin Diesel. It's about a robot who lands on earth and makes friends with a little boy who tries to hide the robot from his mom and the authorities. It's an adorable movie with a couple of good life lessons!

Biggest Loser Workout DVD Diet

Since they're working for me, I'll go ahead and recommend the Biggest Loser workout dvds. This is only the second time I'm watching the tv show, but it's easy to get into and it's actually a great show full of motivation and advice on how to lose weight, or just root for the people that are trying so hard to change their lives. The dvd workouts include some of the members of the past seasons and it's a humanized approach to working out. In addition to the trainers who I love, especially Bob, there are no dance steps to follow and no fast rhythm to keep. You go at your own pace and set your own level. Good luck!

Sweetheart Ball

The 11th Annual Sweetheart Ball benefiting the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Cancer Center will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9th at Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club in Farmingdale from 7pm to midnight. The evening will include both live and silent auctions, a jewelry boutique by Earth Treasures, as well as a raffle and music by the Jazz Lobsters. This year's Ball chair is Eileen Sprance of Wall, who's husband Dr.Henry Sprance has been a big help to us when we raise money to benefit Breast Cancer research each year at JSUMC. Funds raised at the Sweetheart Ball will help purchase image-guided radiation therapy to locate tumors prior to radiation therapy, drastically improving treatment accuracy and ultimately leading to higher cure rates. Tickets for the event are $200 per person. For more information about the Sweetheart Ball please call 732-751-5112.

"Surrounded By Insanity"

I just read a really entertaining book by a local author. It's called "Surrounded by Insanity" by Brick resident Robert A. Hofmann. It's actually a collection of short stories about things that have happened to him in his life, and the memories that he recounts are really funny. I especially love all the local references. It's nice to read stories and visualize the places he's talking about. That guy can really tell a story. Just don't let the cover throw you off....the picture is a little too much for me. One thing's for sure, though, you won't soon forget a Robert A. Hofmann story!

Five things to remember as we start the New Year, as sent in by a Point Listener:

1. A smile from you can bring happiness to someone, even if it's a stranger.
2. There is at least one person in this world that loves you.

P.S. I Love You Is Good

hadn't been to a movie in a couple of years, mainly because I don't want to waste my time seeing a movie unless it was a really good love story - the only kind I like. And I haven't had any of my girlfriends rave to me about a good movie in the past couple of years until now. But last week a close friend of mine told me that I must see P.S. I Love You right away.

So I went online to find out movie times and accidentally pulled up the review page. The critics were trashing the movie as contrived and somewhat silly. So I decided not to waste my time and money. But then something made me change my mind and I am so glad I did. I thought the movie was wonderful and the best love story I've seen since The Notebook. It may not be the best love story of all time, but it really was worth seeing. It's a real tearjerker. The three leading men in the film are fantastic and Hillary Swank is wonderful. I am so glad I didn't listen to a lousy critic. What's wrong with them? Are they all so snobby that they can't appreciate girls who love to see love stories? What's wrong with a tearjerker movie for girls who like that kind of stuff? I just hate the idea of a critic potentially keeping people from seeing what could be, to others, a great movie.

Also, the sweeping scenes of Ireland are amazing to see on the big screen in this film.....another good reason not to wait for it to come out on dvd. Any other great love stories you can think of that have come out in the past, say, ten years? I've heard The Lake House with Sandra and Keanu is good, but I haven't seen it. I did see The Holiday recently on dvd. It was pretty good, but I'm not a huge Cameron Diaz fan. The Wedding Planner with J-Lo and Matt Mc was cute, too. But one of my all-time favorites remains Jerry McGuire.

Excercise "Tips"

For all of you who decided to diet and exercise as your New Year's resolution.....this was sent to me by a listener:

EXERCISE - I have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

- I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
- I have flabby thighs but fortunately my stomach covers them.
- The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.
- Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you, by the time you're 85 years old, to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5,000 per month.
- I joined a health club last year, spent about $400. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.
- And last but not least, I don't exercise because it makes the ice jump right out of my glass. You could run this over to your friends but why not just email it to them!
